I don't think she ever does. In fact I'm pretty sure that after this scene it never comes up again.

Azhure looks around too and sees Axis barely twenty metres behind them, “his face set in determined anger”.

God this bit infuriated me.

She thinks they will make it and the Avar will protect them as soon as they are in the trees.

With what, harsh language? They're pacifists and Azhure should already know that!

Raum slipped “on what had to be the last remaining wet patch of path”. Because of course he slipped on the very last bit of wet path, for the drama. He has “fallen awkwardly” and Azhure can see by how his mouth is pinched that he has hurt himself quite badly.

There is a LOT of Convenient Tripping in this trilogy.

Azhure is close enough to see that Raum’s left ankle is broken with bone sticking out of it.

Under normal circumstances this would have crippled him for life if not cost him the entire foot, but of course it ultimately heals up just fine after having a few generic herbs sprinkled on it. He doesn't have so much as a limp afterwards.

Going back into action, Axis looks “derisive[ly]” at Azhure and says she managed to “surpass [her] mother’s efforts quite nicely”. After all, murdering her father and running off with Raum “far outclasses” eloping with a pedlar.

Yeah, this is right the fuck out of nowhere and also he's acting like a VILLAIN. And not for the last time.

Now let us see how Raum will be saved.

Because of course he will be, despite being an utterly irrelevant character.

HOW IS HE "POWERFUL"??? Do you know how many times we see Raum using his Bane powers?

NEVER. Not once. Not one single demonstration of this alleged "power". And the same goes for Shra, who is also The Most Powerful Bane Evah. So this is just completely meaningless.

Axis never makes amends with Raum for doing this either.

She looks at his face for a moment, but is too concerned to look closely.

Author forbid she take a proper look at him and figure out the most obvious plot twist ever.

My, I wonder who she could have been.

I haven't a clue because I am a complete and utter moron. Or at least that's what the author clearly thinks. Just why this "mystery" had to be dragged out for most of the book is beyond me.

GoldFeather takes offence at his tone, thinking that the Axe-Wielders “always [think] they know everything”

Axis thinks he knows everything because he is a Sue (and therefore correct in being right about everything).

His duty should always be to do what he feels right.

Incorrect. Duty means doing as you are commanded and obliged to do according to your position.

Axis looks back at her with “tormented” eyes and asks if she knows of the Icarii.

LOL at the token display of inner conflict before he forgets all about it.

All Icarii sing and music runs in their blood, but the Enchanters “sing with the power and the grace of the stars themselves”.

Protip: the more you talk these guys (or any character or group) up like this, the more obnoxious they come across as.

Axis asks, “tormented”, who and what he is. I will be able to appreciate this better when we have just Axis to focus on, but this is still not badly done.

It's just not done enough. Once he finds out The Terrible Truth he gets over it VERY FAST.

His voice “tired and colourless”, Axis tells Raum to go, since he has no right to hold him.

It's literally your job to do so.

So he says that, for the “gift of two lives”, he will give Axis one back and hold one for later.

Just what was he planning to do for the second one?

Next time, we will see more of the Avar.

The entire race whose only role in the plot is giving Axis a stick. *facepalm*
