To be very strictly fair, the villagers are unlikely to know abuse victims prefer poison.

Oh I know; I was referring to the author apparently not knowing this.

Axis does seem to have the 'correct' attitudes towards magic, yes. Somehow.

Because Axis always has to be right, no matter what. This is why his "journey" toward accepting his true heritage and stuff is so lame and unconvincing and makes the final scene so very meaningless and hollow. Axis doesn't have to truly struggle with being half Forbidden and using magic because here at the very beginning of his supposed arc he's already fine with using magic and already sympathising with the Avar right out of the blue.

Given that the pacifist Avar consider violent rage downright saintly, I'm thinking Doughlass just... doesn't think outbursts of rage are bad!

Axis is certainly never once criticised for having an out of control violent temper; rather this is painted as totally normal and even praiseworthy.
